Nutrition Talk / Help Creating Detox Plan Food Based Only
« Last post by LaurenH on Today at 03:42:23 PM »
Hello all.
I have been getting a reoccurring question regarding safe detoxification advice from clients. There are 3 in particular that I would like any guidance possible in recommending them food plans. I would focus on food-based only detox. I know it can be unsafe for certain clients to do a detox, so I really need help customizing safe detox plans, including best timing to start for the following clients:

1)     1. Cancer patient after chemo and radiation treatments
2)      2.Client with food poisoning- vomit for 24hours plus diarrhea for 3 days- wants to detox from this and rebuild gut
3)      3.Client that traveled to Africa and received travel vaccines (yellow fever and typhoid) and took doxycycline antibiotic for malaria for 1.5 months wants to get it out of system and start fresh
Any words of wisdom or resources to read and research are greatly appreciated!!
Thank you!

Nutrition Talk / Health concerns with fluoride in water
« Last post by dawnr747 on Today at 01:17:59 PM »
I live in Portland Or, one of the last public water systems without fluoride; at least that is what the "Pro-Fluoride" organization wants us to believe. I need some more information on why we don't want fluoride in our water system. I drink only filtered water because of all the other garbage in our water and now they want to add another chemical. Why are so many people OK with adding it? It seems like a no-brainer to me but I really need help articulating why it's bad for us.

Thanks for your help:)

Michael Zenn, author of Self Health Revolution is giving out 10 day trial bottles. If interested in sampling the elixir, check out Facebook page, Organic Herbal Face Food. I have used it for 8 days and I am seeing a difference.

Nutrition Talk / Re: Nutrition Book and Author

The author(s) have also written "Understanding Nutrition" which is used by many universities and community colleges to teach basic nutrition courses. I have used to teach nursing and nutrition students at community colleges. The book gives complete understanding of nutrition, nutrients, basic biochemistry etc.
Regarding "Concepts and Controversies" book, I respect Jodi's suggestion.

Have you looked inside this book on Amazon? From the small bits I could see, it looks like it adhere's to the "party line," straight from the USDA dietary recommendations.

Nutrition News & Research / Re: Antioxidants...not the cure all?

I've only just scanned those 2 articles but wanted to comment, anyway. From everything I read, and it's a lot, I always note that it's the BALANCE between oxidation and antioxidation that appears to be the crucial factor. The PubMed article focuses on supplements, and the other article mentions them. I haven't read enough of that one to know how much space they devote to diet. By supplements, we need to discern between high-dose nutrients, especially as isolated and possibly not-quite-bioidentical substances, and herbs, which are essentially foods, containing many synergistic ingredients.

I've most recently been looking into nitric oxide (No), which is an oxidative molecule that exerts beneficial effects. But there's a Goldilocks factor with it, as I assume there is with other antioxidant compounds. Too little NO and specific cell-signalling events don't occur, which leads to all kinds of nasty oxidative processes, such as atherosclerosis. Too much NO, and too few dietary plant compounds, and you can again have runaway oxidative stress. When NO combines with superoxide, a very potent oxidant, peroxynitrite is formed, which is very destructive. Many nutrients are involved in keeping the NO process running in a balanced way, and not surprisingly, phytochemicals are involved. However, some acids are also involved, including ascorbic acid. And (sound of trumpets), oral and gut bacteria, which help convert dietary precursors into the active molecule.

What we see so much of with studies (and people actually get paid for this!) is embarrassing levels of oversimplification. The body has oxidative stress, therefore high doses of antioxidant supplements should fix things. Uh, not so much. I find the complexity absolutely fascinating and am always just a tad gleeful when "simple" doesn't pan out. It's like keeping score: Body: 1, Research: 0. Yay, body!

I donated to the project, so I'll be testing my bacteria. I'm excited. $99 buys one test, which is what I opted to do. $180 gets you two, and on up. They'll also test your dog's microbiome, though they didn't mention anything about cats.

Just came across this book and author(s) on Amazon and was wondering if anyone has referenced and/or read anything by these authors or knows anything about them and the validity of their research and facts.  Its quite a  pricey book and looks like it may be used as text in some nutrition programs...Thanks!
