Using Bulk Goods
« on: March 19, 2012, 03:17:39 PM »
I have been trying to cook and eat at home as much as possible, which is difficult when you work in a restaurant. I have slowly moved into keeping canned goods, but in the last few months I have been trying to buy everything in bulk. I am such a slave to the directions on the box of rice or the fact that canned beans are ready to eat. I know that soaking beans can help and what not but can anyone offer me any advice? I only cook for 2 if that helps...

thnx!

Have you considered cooking up big batches of dishes and freezing them in containers big enough for one or two meals? Makes it so much easier when you're in a hurry for something to eat.

When purchasing bulk foods, especially beans, you may want to check with your store regarding the country of origin of the products. When I was in a food-buying club, a lot of the beans were coming from China. Not very sustainable, in terms of miles traveled, and also, perhaps less than organic, if that's what you're purchasing.
