Natural solutions for acne-prone skin!
« on: April 06, 2012, 05:41:10 PM »
I have sensitive skin that seemed to be "healed" of acne until a particularly stressful/traumatic period of life 5-7 months ago.  Any advice on natural products that are inexpensive?  How about foods and/or supplements?

I'll tell you what I have tried already...  In the name of products: Nelson's homeopathic line, various products from Peter Thomas Roth and Proactiv (containing not-so-good for you benzoyl peroxide - I have used this on and off for years with the best results, but I hear its addictive.  Could this be the problem?)

I try to eat a mainly plant based diet with daily portions of animal products that is tending more and more towards fully organic. I have even tried supplements with zinc/chromium/vit. c and some liver cleansing herbs.  Aforementioned, the best results come from use of Proactiv, but I'd prefer something more natural and non-addictive.  I know skin problems can come from any number of food allergies, sensitivities, pollutants and/or internal imbalances (hormonal, etc), but I'd love to hear your advice in case the magical missing link is your wisdom, knowledge or experience!

The first priority is stopping the break-outs, but I'm also concerned about scarring. Any advice there?

Acne can be a tough one, especially because once you finally feel like you’ve got a handle on things…you can have another episode.  Hormones change, life throws you an unexpected curve, or you overindulge on sugar for a few days.
That being said, it takes a culmination of good eating, in addition to a healthy lifestyle.

In regards to foods, here’s what I would recommend focusing on and some potential food sources for you to try if you haven’t already;

•WATER: Lots of hydration will not only help moisture the skin, but also help flush out any unwanted toxins.
•FRUITS & VEGGIES: High in anti-inflammatory agents; consume away!
•VITAMIN A: Almost all acne medications contain Vitamin A and the reason why is that it is anti-clogging.
     oSalmon, Carrots, Spinach, Broccoli
•ZINC:  Helps to calm irritated skin and repair already damaged tissue.
oOysters, Sesame Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Squash,
•VITAMIN E & C: Both Vitamin E & C having calming affects on the skin.
     oNuts, Olive Oil, Broccoli, Avocados
oOranges, Papayas, Tomatoes, Kiwi (Vitamin C)
•SELENIUM: Selenium will help control cell damage in the skin.
oSalmon, Tuna, Beans, Eggs, Brown Rice
•OMEGA 3’S: Again, lots of anti-inflammatory agents here, aiding in fighting off what general might trigger a skin disturbance.
     oSalmon, Flax seed oil, Nuts

All of the aforementioned should also help reduce any scaring.

All of this being said, I would highly recommend you focus issue that seemed to trigger your recent outbreak; stress.  Stress can do wonders on the body, as can having an outlet to help relieve stress.  If you haven’t already try to find an outlet that helps you distress in any way possible; working out, yoga, meditation, journaling, tea with friends, or walking a friendly pet ;)

Thank you!!! That's a great list :)  Thankfully, since starting the program at Bauman (and consequently making some dietary changes), my acne has improved!!  This may also have to do with stress levels normalizing.
