GE SUGAR BEETS
« on: April 09, 2008, 10:38:16 PM »
There has been a new and scary development in the world of agriculture and nutrition. The genetically engineered sugar beet has just been released by Monsanto in time for spring plantings all across the United States. We have 1.4 million acres planted in sugar beets across the U.S, half of all our sugar production (the other half is in sugar cane),  and now farmers have the option of planting the genetically engineered "Round - Up Ready" sugar beet seed. These seeds are genetically engineered to survive direct application of the Monsanto herbicide "Round - Up". This has negative implications for the health of our bodies and the environment. Of course like our other widespread GE crops corn and soy, products containing GE sugar, which are bound to hit the shelves by the fall, will not be labeled as GE. So... another reason to buy organic. For further information check out the Center Food Safety's website at: http://www.centerforfoodsafety.org/SugarBeetsPR01_23_08.cfm and True Food Now! at:
