Resilience
« on: May 01, 2008, 12:53:33 PM »
These are challenging times. It's helpful to remember the axiom, "That which doesn't kill you, makes you stronger".  Virtually everyone I know is managing more and more stress than ever before. Overwhelm is a recurring theme. This can wear us down, making us vulnerable to illness, intemperance and injury. The outside world is in crisis. How can we manage to live well, stay in alignment with self, family, community and nature? It begins with daily practice. The more work I have, the earlier I get up in the morning, not to work, but to prepare myself, mind, body and spirit to show up for the work. Knowing that you are here for a reason and connecting your life with a purpose and actively pursuing a positive outcome is what helps one become strong, centered and able to endure the slings and arrows of adversity. I am so grateful for my Bauman College staff, faculty, students, graduates and community. We walk our talk. We eat for health, not because it is trendy, but because it enables us to stay strong and clear headed. The coming days will be a test of resilience and internal discipline. Those who bend but do not break when under pressure will be able to lead by example and be able to help those who are suffering from exhaustion of physical, emotional, financial and social resources. My recipe for building resilience is as follows
1 part humility, 2 parts healthy living, 3 parts connecting to mission and 4 parts learning to exhale, let go and and trust that we are the ones to make a difference in the world in whatever way we can. Not taking on the weight of the world allows one to maintain perspective, humor and have a forward thinking mentality that leads to concrete service and growth. Try this on as a daily affirmation: "I welcome what life presents me today with total trust. The process of taking each situation as it comes and responding to the best of my abilities makes me stronger and more resilient than I was the day before." Look to Bauman College as a force for the good. By connecting with our purpose, which is to bring Eating for Health to as many people as possible... you are never alone or without support. May you find creative ways to underwhelm your self today. ED

Dear Ed,

Thank you for these words of encouragement!

My closest cousin in Sweden, Nina, has been diagnosed with cancer of the liver. She has already had cancer of the colon twice and she is a widow with two daughters. Is there any advice that we could give her to help her? I have already sent her a list of foods to avoid and suggested that she meditates and stays positive, as much as possible. I know that the survival rate of this type of cancer is very low.

I think that you wrote a book for cancer patients. Is it still available?

Yesterday, I was speaking to a doctor/researcher from UCSF who is trying to change the USDA food pyramid. He is meeting with a lot of resistance! He is doing research on fructose and finding how detrimental it is in the diet.  He is encouraging his patients to eat more fiber! He was impressed with the knowledge that I have acquired at Bauman College, so far!

I am sorry to hear about your cousin with cancer. I suggest she consult with me directly if she is interested. I could send her an intake and when it is returned suggest next steps re. diet, herbs, supplements, labs and how to use natural health practices with conventional medicine. My approach is to connect deeply with the person and decide what would be the MOST helpful approach to support their quality of life and vitality rather than TREAT the cancer, which isn't the way a nutrition consultant works. I have found the relationship I or my associates form with the person with an illness helps the client and their family manage the problem on several levels, beyond just diet. The book you are referring to 'Controlling Cancer in the Community' is currently in revision. I can send you the important parts of it via an email to edb@baumancollege.org

Dr. Bauman,
With all of the stress, there is an increasing demand on the body for nourishment, while at the same time, a possible lessening of the time dedicated to providing fresh, natural, organic, in-season nourishment.
That brings us to the subject of supplements.
There is an immense range of quality and sources of the vitamins and minerals that supplements are designed to add to the body.
And, cyclically, the pendulum has swung back, and doctors are again recommending that people strongly consider adding them to their intake.
We can't just go to Costco and buy the Jumbo Fix!
I believe that it would be very desirable for you, with the faculty and staff, to apply your special knowledge to analyze some of the products out there, and let us know which brands, or better, which origin of vitamin formulations we should consider, when self-realization makes us aware that we might be in danger of having less than the proper or optimum vitamin and mineral intake from our stress-abreviated diets.

Hi Thomas,

There is already quite a bit of discussion about supplements by our faculty in the forums, do a search above and you should find what you are looking for.

Thank you Ed for the wonderful words of encouragement.  As a DL student, I can tell you that I have learned some of the most invaluable information from staff, my mentor, and the forum.  It is very interesting that some of the chapters that I have been studying directly relates to ME...and it is because of the blessings from God, that I have some of the tools by attending this course to help me deal with my issues.  You are right, there is a great deal of stress, sadness, and grief all around the world, but I trust that my faith and the knowledge that I am obtaining through this course, I will be able to help myself as well as my family and friends.  Thanks for taking the time to give back to a hurting world...

Blessings to you for all that you are doing....

I am grateful, Ed Bauman, that I had the opportunity to read and use the daily affirmation that you wrote about.  I am grateful for being involved in this wonderful Bauman College community and feeling connection now with healthy nutrition minded people and organic farmers worldwide.  The current news here at home and abroad for so many families, children, groups and our planet is saddening.  Your Eating for Health model is helping me become more aware of what I eat, where it comes from and how I can help others.  Having this to do makes it easier for me to continue to become more resilient and positive minded. I thank you and all involved in making this community possible.
I also wrote an affirmation for these times that I'd like to pass on:
                      With steady courage and acceptance,
                      I am honored and protected.
                      I feel community with all.
                      I feel gratitude for all.
                      I feel trust in all.

Thanks, Julia

To Dr. Edward Bauman.

I attended the Natural Chef Program in Boulder, CO.  We never had a chance to speak both times you came to visit.  When you spoke on one occasion, I felt reassured my intuition was correct in advising me to attend the program.  It was astonishing for me to realize that their are individuals who actually practice what they preach so to speak; and have suspended ego and truly practice unselfish love.

Moving to Boulder was a challenge, overcoming my fears was a challenge.  I met them both head on and succeeded.  Learning many lessons in a short amount of time has always been my personal mantra.  As I continue to grow in this lifetime, I am confident that I now have the tools and the attitude necessary to be a conduit for  the mass re- education of the human population that is happening on so many different levels.

Thank you,

Timothy J. Frederick
